It should be obvious to everyone that belief in God did NOT begin as a hypothesis.
Belief in divine things lies much lower and deeper (both historically and psychologically) than this. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be helpful to consider God as a hypothesis, at least for the sake of argument. Admittedly, for the faithful doing this might seem impious. After all, the living God is no mere hypothesis thank you very much. Neither is God merely one more entity to be postulated if we happen to find that this suits our purposes. Nevertheless, treating God as a hypothesis needn’t mean treating God as merely a hypothesis.
